Fauna Surveys
EkoInfo CC, in association with taxa-specific specialists, conducts animal surveys across the range from micro to macro fauna. These studies include habitat verification, especially with regard to Red Data species.
Capabilities
Fauna surveys form part of EIAs, EMPRs, and livestock management reports. EkoInfo has in-house expertise for medium to large mammals and uses taxon-specific zoologists for small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, arthropods, and insects.
Ecological Relevance
Fauna represents consumers in the ecological food chain. They are often used as indicators of environmental change. They are the most conspicuous component of the environment when disasters (natural or manmade) occur. Due to their visibility, they can spark a large reaction from the public when their existence is threatened.
The large vertebrates (cattle, game, marine mammals) have economic value (food production, tourism, recreation) but cannot be sustainably managed in the absence of their less conspicuous, and sometimes less flamboyant, relatives (invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and birds).
Deliverables
- Species Diversity
- Presence and/or absence of Red Data Species
- Habitat Assessment for Breeding or Conservation
- Population Dynamics (age and sex ratios)
